Sustainability Stories
Environmental sustainability is a core value of fair trade—and women artisans around the world are leading the way as stewards of their environments. Their creativity is shaped by tradition, resilience, and the natural resources available to them.
In Nepal, women craft with small glass beads as well as gemstones, made accessible through our partners at Beads for Life Nepal.
In Ghana, generations of artisans have perfected the art of glass bead making. Our partners at Global Mamas support these women with fair income—offering some of the highest wages in the country’s informal economy.
In Northern Uganda, where conflict and poverty have deeply impacted communities, women turn recycled paper into beautiful beads with support from Project Have Hope—a powerful symbol of renewal and resilience.
Each handcrafted piece reflects the strength of women and the sustainable future they are building.

Hope Paper Beads
Made with love form the resiliant hands of the women from Prjoect Have Hope in Uganda. Each bead is made from recycled paper, meticulously folded into tight triangles, reshaped multiple times for strength, then dyed in bold, joyful hues and sealed with a non-toxic shellac for durability and shine. After drying under the sun, the beads are strung together with care, often accented with delicate charms or glass beads to create a beautiful and unique piece ready to brighten your day.Â

Ghanaian Glass Beads
From Bottle to Beads - With love from Global Mamas! Global Mamas beads are hand crafted in Ghana’s eastern region. Bead making is a craft passed down through the generations. Glass bottles and old windows are hand poured into a fine powder and dye may be added, then the powder is poured into clay molds which are fired in traditional kilns. The final step for many beads is to be hand painted with unique designs that have made Ghana’s glass beads famous worldwide. They create four types of beads: translucent /clear beads, powdered glass beads, painted glass beads and seed beads- each has their unique attributes and combine to provinde a sensational and unique style.
